Use these as practical starting points, then follow the instructions supplied with the specific lubricant, toy or condom.

What you are using Safest starting point Important check
Silicone toy Water-based Use silicone or hybrid only when the toy manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Latex or polyisoprene condom Water-based or silicone-based Avoid oil-based products because oils can weaken these condom materials.
Stroker or masturbator Manufacturer-approved water-based Materials vary, so follow the device maker's instructions.
Shower or water play Silicone-based Confirm toy compatibility and take care because surfaces can become slippery.
Anal play Thicker water-based or compatible silicone-based Use generously and reapply whenever friction increases.

Use it well

Four practical habits

  1. Start small. Add more as needed.
  2. Reapply when needed. More friction is a signal to pause.
  3. Clean according to the product and toy instructions.
  4. Check compatibility every time. Manufacturer guidance takes priority.

Helpful answers

Choosing and using lubricant

What lubricant should a beginner choose?

A straightforward water-based lubricant is usually the simplest starting point because it is easy to clean and widely compatible. Always check the instructions for your condom or toy.

Can I use silicone lubricant with a silicone toy?

Only when the toy manufacturer confirms compatibility. Water-based lubricant is the safer default for silicone toys.

Which lubricant works with condoms?

Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are generally suitable with latex condoms. Avoid oil-based products with latex or polyisoprene condoms and follow the condom manufacturer's instructions.

What is best for a stroker or masturbator?

Use a water-based lubricant approved by the device manufacturer. A lubricant recommended for one brand should not automatically be assumed safe for every other brand.

Why use a thicker lubricant for anal play?

A thicker texture can provide more cushioning and stay where it is applied. Use generously, reapply when needed and stop if anything feels painful.

When should lubricant be reapplied?

Pause and add more whenever glide decreases or friction increases. Longer sessions and water-based formulas may require more frequent reapplication.

Compare the exact formula

A brand name does not tell you the whole formula

Use the finder above as a starting point. Then compare the current ingredients, selected size and the instructions for the exact toy and barrier you plan to use.

Water-based choices

Sliquid H2O, JO H2O Original and Anal Thick, Swiss Navy Water, Gun Oil H2O, and Pink Water or Natural are different water-based choices. Their ingredients and textures differ; water-based does not make every formula interchangeable.

Compare Sliquid, System JO, Swiss Navy, Gun Oil and Pink.

Silicone and cleanup

Swiss Navy Silicone offers lasting, water-resistant glide. It may need gentle soap for cleanup. Use silicone lubricant with a silicone toy only if the exact toy maker permits it; easy-rinse cleanup may favour a water-based choice instead.

Hybrid means different blends

JO Classic Hybrid combines water and silicone. JO Coconut Hybrid combines water-based ingredients and coconut oil. Pink Indulgence is a water-and-silicone cream. Check each current label and exact toy and barrier instructions rather than treating all hybrids alike.

Specialty products have different uses

Gun Oil Stroke 29 contains water and natural oils; its manufacturer says it is not intended for intercourse or condom use. Toy cleaner, arousal products and delay products are also different from an everyday lubricant.

Compare sizes fairly: a 5ml sample price is not a full-bottle price. Check the selected size, current price, ingredients and available option on the product page. A larger bottle is useful only if its formula, usable life and your intended use fit your needs.
